After FATMAP: free options for ski maps and day replay
FATMAP closed in 2024, after Strava bought it. If you used it to look at mountains in 3D or to look back at a ski day, here is where to go now.
A few alternatives
- beyondmaps. A mapping app aimed at planning off-piste and backcountry trips in 3D, with avalanche terrain information. Check its own site for what is free and what is paid.
- Slopes. An iPhone app for tracking ski days, with stats for each run and lift. Check its own site for what is free and what is paid.
- Strava. It now owns FATMAP’s team and technology, and records many sports, including skiing.
- Your watch’s own app. Garmin, Apple and others record ski activities. You can export the file and use it elsewhere.
Each tool does a different job. Some plan a day, some record it and some replay it.
What EM Snow does
EM Snow is a free hobby project, not a company with a big team. It does less than the big apps, and it tries to be honest about it.
- Resort pages. Snow depth, forecast, lifts open, sun on the slopes and avalanche danger where it is published, for over 5,000 resorts.
- Your day. Drop a GPX, FIT or TCX file and see every run and lift ride, speed, height and the conditions that day. It is worked out in your browser and the file stays on your device. Try Your day.
- A 3D view. The Snow Globe shows selected resorts over real terrain, and Fly it replays a run there.
- A Garmin watch app. Snow, lifts, Next lift, Get Me Down and your recorded day, on your wrist. See the beta page for where it stands.
What it does not do
EM Snow does not plan backcountry routes, and it is not a replacement for avalanche training or a local forecast. If that is what you used FATMAP for, look at the planning tools above.
